I eagerly look forward to festivities and Navratri has always been special. Yesterday was the first day of festivities and although I was not Fasting, I decided to have a special meal as I love the festive dishes which are prepared especially during fasting days. Mastkalandar had been advertising their Navratri & Utsav thali all over the radio channels and I was tempted to try it out. There is an outlet pretty close by in EPIP area Whitefield which is what I chose to go, with hopes to enjoy the meal and experience. The hoardings outside the outlet looked promising and we were excited to enjoy our meal.
Well I was proved grossly wrong. The service was pathetic while both the Thali’s were just about ok. The outlet manages home delivery as well, and the phone in the restaurant kept blazing “Saare Jahan Se Achaa” in sharp tones, not good at all for the in house guests. The restaurant manager and servers were not able to manage the 4 or 5 tables which were occupied and were clearly irritated (seemed due to heavy rain and piling up delivery orders). The phone was set on speaker and we were forced to hear the conversation going on between the angry customers who have ordered the food online and the manager. After a wait of around 30 minutes, our food arrived (generally a 30 minute wait is not too much but when you go to a restaurant which is promoting their special set menu, you expect a little more efficiency in their service ).
On first sight, both the thalies looked pretty tempting .
Maha Utsav Thali – Chole, shahi kofte and bhindi ki sabzi were good and the rice was also pretty decent but the poories were too oily and the shakkappare felt little undercooked to me. I am very selective for my dessert and can only eat sweets that are made to perfection. Gulab jamun that came in this thali was good.
Vrat ki Thali – Kuttu ki poories were perfect, but the curries lacked taste, especially the paneer curry. Over all nothing much to say about a speciality thali that they are advetising so much.
I would not recommend it to anyone, who is expecting even a half decent Navratri experience. May be order it at home and have something different, however be prepared for a long wait in deliveries…
