About This Recipe
Ever tried frying okra in an air fryer? These air fryer okra are crispy, crunchy, and with no sliminess. Serve this healthy okra dish as a side with your meals, top them on your salads or soups or serve them as an appetizer with a dipping sauce.
Breaded with flour, eggs, & breadcrumbs, and then air-fried to golden-brown perfection, the fresh okra gets super crispy with only a few sprays of oil. Frying the okra in the air fryer is also less messy, less time-consuming, and fuss-free.
Ingredients

Okra – Get your hands on bright green, smooth, tender, and blemish-free okra. Do not get the ones that have brown spots or dry ends. Wash and pat them dry completely, otherwise, they might turn slimy while air frying.
You can also use frozen okra instead of fresh. Thaw completely, pat dry and then follow the same procedure as mentioned below. Using frozen okra can save you a little time.
If you don’t have time to make fried okra from scratch, try making breaded frozen okra. Put the frozen breaded okra in the basket of the air fryer. Air fry at 350 degrees F for about 12-15 minutes until crispy, shaking the basket once or twice during cooking.
If there is any moisture left in the okra after slicing, it will become slimy. So make sure you pat it dry completely with a paper towel before air frying.
Egg – Egg helps the flour and bread crumbs to stick properly to the okra. If you want to make these vegetarian, replace the egg with buttermilk.
Flour Mixture – Prepare a mixture of all-purpose flour, salt, ground pepper, and garlic powder. You can add hot paprika to this mixture for a spicy kick.
Bread Crumbs – I prefer to use panko bread crumbs to coat the okra as they give it a crispy and crunchy outer layer. You can use regular breadcrumbs too. Don’t have bread crumbs? Use cornmeal instead.
You can also use flavored breadcrumbs for added flavor.
Oil – Spray a little olive oil or coconut oil to make the okra super crispy. You can also use other high smoke point oils such as avocado oil or sesame oil.
How to make Air Fryer Okra?
Start with washing and cutting 8 oz (225 g) fresh okra. Wipe each of them with a paper towel. Chop off the stems and ends, then cut into 1″ pieces.
To make sure okra doesn’t turn slimy, I like to wash them a day prior to cooking to get rid of any extra moisture. Also, use a very sharp knife to chop.
In a medium bowl, whisk together 1 large egg and 1 teaspoon water, set aside.

Stir together 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour, ½ teaspoon salt, ¼ teaspoon ground pepper, and ½ teaspoon garlic powder in a medium bowl.

Toss the okra in the flour mixture.

Then dip each piece in the egg mixture, and finally in the bread crumbs. You can use a fork to dip the pieces in the egg and then use one of your hand to coat them with breadcrumbs.

Line the basket of the air fryer with aluminum foil or perforated parchment paper (less messy) and transfer the breaded okra to the basket. Arrange them in a single layer and do not overcrowd.

Spray with cooking oil and air fry at 350°F for 10-12 minutes until golden, shaking the basket every 4 minutes. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you will likely need to do this in two batches.
