    About This Recipe

There are a few things which are always there in my refrigerator, handy to be used when there are sudden hunger pangs and the kiddo wants something delicious too.

Therefore, one of my favorite thing to prepare and keep is this Homemade Pizza Sauce, which is made using fresh tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato puree, fresh basil leaves, and slightly flavored with spices.

This sauce is very easy to prepare at home, with few ingredients, and can also be stored for a week.

You can just slather it on either a whole wheat pizza base or on a whole wheat bread slice, topped with a generous dose of Mozzarella, pop in the oven for a few minutes and your delicious snack is done.

While coming up to this recipe, I have tried a lot of combinations and proportions in the past and finally have settled down on this one.

    This Homemade Pizza Sauce is,

    • Fresh
    • Gluten-Free
    • Made with high-quality ingredients
    • Made from scratch
    • Free of preservatives
    • Best for homemade Pizzas and Toast

    Ingredients

Tomato – Tomatoes are used in three variations in this sauce for the best taste – Fresh finely chopped tomatoes, tomato puree, and tomato paste. You can use store-bought tomato paste for the best taste.

Also for the fresh tomatoes, opt for red and ripe tomatoes, as they are sweet and delivers the best taste.

Basil Leaves – This is the key to a delicious Pizza Sauce. Basil Leaves adds a unique and authentic flavor to the sauce. Always go for fresh leaves, as they deliver the freshness and best taste in the sauce along with a nice aroma.

Oil – Use only olive oil for authentic taste. But in case you do not have the same, you can use vegetable oil or butter too.

Garlic – This is the key to a good Italian Pizza sauce, so do not miss on garlic. You can also increase the quantity of you like the garlicky flavor in your tomato sauce.

Oregano – Add in some dry oregano, which adds a slightly bitter and pungent flavor. It really adds to the taste.

Red Chilli Powder – Add in red chili powder for some spicy flavor and color in the same. You can also go for red chili flakes to increase the spice level of this sauce.

Others – You will need a little sugar, to add that slight hint of sweetness. Along with it add in salt and black pepper powder to enhance the taste of the sauce even more.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Which tomatoes are the best to make it?

I agree that San Marzano tomatoes usually make the best of Pizza Sauce but we cannot be importing them from Italy, right?

If you are lucky then you might find them in India but trust me even the usual homegrown tomatoes do create a lip-smacking Homemade Sauce.

So, do not feel bad or disheartened to use them. If you live in the US, a can of San Marzano goes a long way and would be my preferred choice to make this sauce.

If using fresh tomatoes, select the ones that are red and fully ripe. Remove the seeds before adding them to the pan.

    How to make it Vegan?

The key ingredient of pizza sauce is tomatoes and a blend of spices that imparts a sharp flavor to the recipe. So the sauce itself is vegan as no dairy or meat is added to it. You can just avoid adding butter and increase the quantity of olive oil in the same.

You can make some pretty amazing vegan pizzas out of this delicious recipe! The sauce is low in carb and therefore it makes it health-friendly but appetizing.
Just spread the pizza sauce over the pizza crust and relish your favorite dish.

Can I use Pasta Sauce instead of Pizza Sauce?

No, I won’t recommend it. Both the sauces are prepared with tomatoes, but there is a difference in the flavor and consistency.

While the Pizza sauce is a little thick, Pasta sauce is thinner in consistency. Also, Pizza Sauce also has an oregano flavor along with Basil, whereas Pasta sauce has more basil flavor.

    Usage Suggestions

Mainly, you can use this sauce to make your Homemade Pizzas. Just spread the sauce, top with your favorite toppings such as onions, mushrooms, bell pepper, baby corn, tofu, chicken, beef, or pepperoni, grate some cheese and bake it.

You can use it to make open toast or can also spread it in your sandwiches.

Use this sauce to make a base for your Risotto balls or other Italian recipes.

You can make starters such as Pizza Bombs, Pizza Crackers, Pizza Pie etc using this sauce.

    Storing Suggestions

This sauce will last in the fridge for about a week when stored in an airtight container.

You can even freeze this sauce. I will recommend you to store small portions in different containers that you will need for a particular day. Freeze them in a freezer-safe airtight container for about 3 months and keep a little empty space in the container on top.

Thaw it overnight in the refrigerator and use it the next day for your Pizza or Toast.
