One sip of masala soda takes me straight back to Sadar Bazaar in Jhansi. Sweaty afternoons, paper-wrapped samosas, and the golgappa wala uncle pushing a fizzing glass into my hand. The fizz hits your nose first. Then the lime kicks in. Then comes that smoky, salty cumin punch that tastes like nothing else in the world.

Most bottled "Indian sodas" you find in stores cannot match this. They taste flat and overly sweet. The real version takes 5 minutes, four pantry spices, and one lime, and it beats every soft drink in your fridge.

I have been making this masala nimbu soda at home for over 15 summers now. My recipe nails the balance of sweet, sour, salty, and spicy without leaning too hard in any one direction.

## What Is Masala Soda?

In Hindi, masala = spice mix and soda = carbonated water. So masala soda literally means "spiced carbonated water."

It is a popular North Indian summer drink also called nimbu masala soda. Street vendors across Delhi, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh sell it in tall glasses topped with crushed ice, sometimes sprinkled with boondi.

Nowadays, you get a pre-made masala soda powder in the market, but believe me, there is nothing more refreshing than **making it from scratch** with fresh ingredients.

If you enjoy bold Indian coolers, you will love this just as much as my [jaljeera recipe](https://www.whiskaffair.com/jal-jeera-indian-mint-cumin-lemonade/); they share a flavor family, but masala soda is faster and fizzier.

## Ingredients

- **Mint Leaves** - Use fresh mint leaves for the best taste.

- **Lime Juice* ***- This drink is best made using freshly squeezed lime juice. You can also use lemon juice.

- **Ginger** adds a pleasant peppery taste to this fizzy drink. In case you do not have fresh ginger, you can add a little dried ginger powder instead.

- **Sugar **- Adjust to your taste. You can increase or decrease the amount of sugar to adjust how sweet you want the soda to be. You can also use honey or maple syrup instead of sugar to sweeten your drink.

- **Club Soda **- Top the drink with chilled club soda (soda water) for a nice zing.

- **Seasonings** - To add a tangy, spicy flavor, you will need [chaat masala powder](https://www.whiskaffair.com/homemade-chaat-masala-recipe/), black salt (kala namak), black pepper powder, and [roasted cumin powder](https://www.whiskaffair.com/how-to-make-cumin-powder/).

![](https://www.whiskaffair.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/idea.png)

**Note on Kala Namak:** Indian black salt has a strong sulfur smell when raw, and that is normal. It mellows beautifully in the drink. Look for it at any Indian grocery or order it online. Do not substitute regular salt or pink Himalayan salt; their flavors are completely different.

## Variations

- **Mango Masala Soda**: Add 2 tablespoons of [aam panna](https://www.whiskaffair.com/aam-panna/) (raw mango concentrate) for a fruity, tropical twist. Perfect for May–June heat.

- **Kala Khatta Soda**: Stir in 1 tablespoon of jamun (black plum) puree and a pinch of extra kala namak. A childhood favorite.

- **Cocktail Version**: Add 1.5 oz of vodka or gin for a grown-up summer party drink. The masala holds up beautifully against spirits.

- **Watermelon Masala Soda**: Muddle a few watermelon cubes at the bottom of the glass.

- **With Kokum:** Add some kokum juice while making the nimbu masala soda.

- **With Flavored Soda:** Add Coca-Cola, 7-Up, or Sprite instead of plain soda water.

## Storage Suggestions

You can make the mint mixture and refrigerate it for up to*** *4 days.* ***When ready to use, pour it into serving glasses and top with soda water.

You can also **freeze** this mixture in ice cube trays for up to 3 months. Just pop out one cube, thaw it, and use it to make this refreshing drink.
