These air fryer okra are easy to make, fuss-free, and great to munch on whenever the hunger strikes. Make this crispy treat in under 15 minutes using simple ingredients and very little oil.
Start with washing and cutting fresh okra. Chop off the stems and ends, then cut into 1″ pieces.
In a medium bowl, whisk together a large egg and 1 teaspoon water, set aside.
Stir together all-purpose flour, salt, ground pepper, and garlic powder in a medium bowl.
Toss the okra in the flour mixture.
Then dip each piece in the egg mixture, and finally in the bread crumbs.
Line the basket of the air fryer with aluminium foil or perforated parchment paper and transfer the breaded okra to the basket. Arrange them in a single layer.
Spray with oil and air fry at 350°F for 10-12 minutes until golden, shaking the basket every 4 minutes. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you will likely need to do this in two batches. Serve!
Notes
My recipe uses breadcrumbs, but if you want to make Southern-style okra then you can use cornmeal instead. To make a vegetarian version of okra, replace eggs with buttermilk. To make it without breading, toss the chopped okra with olive oil, salt, and pepper and air fry for 10-12 minutes, shaking the basket every 4 minutes. While air frying okra, shake the basket a few times for even cooking. Make sure that you shake it lightly so that the breading doesn't fall off.Do not overload your air fryer basket, fry in batches if you want a larger quantity. The cooking time may also vary a bit, depending on which air fryer you own.The okra looks like a lot initially, but once you air fry, it shrinks quite a bit.
