Ingredients

  • 250 g Tinde / Apple Gourd Peeled and cut into 4 pieces
  • 1 cup Chana dal
  • 2 tbsp Vegetable oil
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Fennel seeds
  • 1/2 cup Onion Chopped
  • 2-3 Green chilli Slit into half
  • 5-6 cloves Garlic Crushed
  • 1/2 cup Tomato Chopped
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste

For tempering

  • 2 tbsp Ghee
  • 1/4 tsp Heeng
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp Red chilli powder

Instructions

  1. Wash tinde and peel them.
  2. Cut each into 4 pieces.
  3. Wash the dal and soak in enough water for 20 minutes.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a pressure cooker.
  5. Once the oil is hot, add cumin seeds and fennel seeds and let them crackle for a few seconds.
  6. Add onion and fry for 3-4 minutes.
  7. Add green chilli and garlic and fry for another minute.
  8. Now add tomato and fry for 3-4 minutes.

  9. Drain the dal and add it in the pressure cooker along with 4 cups of water, tinde, turmeric powder and salt and pressure cook until done.
  10. Remove the pressure cooker from heat and let the pressure release.

For tempering:

  1. Heat ghee in a pan.
  2. Once the ghee hot, add heeng and cumin seeds and let them crackle for a few seconds.
  3. Switch off the heat and add red chilli powder in the pan.
  4. Pour the tempering over cooked dal and mix well.
  5. Serve the dal with steamed rice or Phulke.
