Thayir Aval is an easy recipe made from poha and buttermilk. When I run out of breakfast options, Thayir Aval rescues me as a healthier breakfast. Here is how to make it.

Ingredients

  • 1 and 1/2 cup Buttermilk
  • 1 and 1/2 cup Poha
  • 1 tbsp Vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp Urad dal
  • 1 tsp Chana dal
  • 10-12 Curry leaves
  • 2-3 Dry red chilli
  • 1/4 tsp Heeng
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/4 cup Fresh grated coconut

Instructions

  1. Wash the poha under running water and drain it.
  2. Mix poha and buttermilk in a pan and keep aside for 20-30 minutes.
  3. Heat oil in pan.
  4. Once the oil is hot, add mustard seeds, urea dal, chana dal, curry leaves, dry red chilli and heeng and fry for a few seconds until the dals are browned.
  5. Add the poha and buttermilk in the pan and mix well.
  6. Add slat and freshly grated coconut and mix well.
  7. Garnish with fresh coriander.
  8. Serve hot.
