Pears Poached in Red Wine and Cinnamon

  • Pears-3
  • Red wine-2 cups I used Merlot
  • Cinnamon-1stick
  • Sugar-12 cup
  • Lemon juice- 4 tsp
  • Bay leaf-1


  1. Peel the pears carefully , leaving the stalk intact
  2. Cut a straight slice off the bottom, so that they can stand upright
  3. In a deep bottom pan, add red wine, lemon juice, sugar , cinnamon stick and bay leaf
  4. Bring to a boil
  5. Add pears to the pan on their sides
  6. Simmer the heat and cook the pears for 30-40 minutes turning them at regular intervals
  7. Take the pan, off the heat
  8. Cool it down.
  9. Remove the pears from the pan, using a slotted spoon
  10. Keep the pan on heat and cook till the wine is reduced to a syrupy consistency
  11. When serving, keep the pears on a plate
  12. Drizzle with the wine sauce
  13. Serve with a scoop of ice cream
  14. You can also heat the pears before serving
