Add water, brown sugar, cloves, cinnamon sticks, star anise, and orange slices to a saucepan.
Keep the pan over medium-high heat and bring the water to a boil.
Tip - You can slightly crush the spices in a mortar and pestle for a more potent spice flavor.
Now reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 5 minutes.
Add rum to the pan and simmer for 20 seconds to heat the rum.
Strain the drink into serving glasses.
Garnish with a star anise, an orange slice, and a cinnamon stick. Serve hot. You can also use a mint sprig to garnish the drink for a pop of color.

Notes
Do not add rum and boil the water. Alcohol evaporates when heated, and if you boil it, you will be left with only rum flavor and no alcohol. The trick is to infuse the water with spices and then add the rum at the end.Sugar can be adjusted as per your taste. I like this drink slightly sweet but if you want, you can totally skip adding sugar to the recipe.
