After many Fridays. Mohit and I were home with nothing substantial to do. It was also super cold outside, so I decided to make a rum-based hot cocktail. I used my tried-and-tested Mulled Wine recipe (which BTW is not yet on the blog) as the base and made this Mulled Rum. I am happily announcing that this Mulled Rum will be my official cocktail this winter.

This drink is very soothing and relaxing, and the taste is like winter exploding in your mouth.

About Mulled Rum

Mulled Rum is a variation of the popular winter drink, Mulled Wine. To make this cocktail, water is simmered with spices and orange slices until it is infused with the spicy, tangy flavors. Dark rum is added to this spiced water, and the drink is served hot.

It is a perfect drink for winter evenings when you are looking for something warm and relaxing.

To make things go more quickly, you can make a large batch of spiced water and refrigerate it. Whenever you want to serve this drink, just heat the water, add rum, and a quick winter cocktail is ready in no time.

Pro Tips By Neha

Do not add rum and boil the water. Alcohol evaporates when heated; if you boil it, you will be left with only the rum flavor and no alcohol. The trick is to infuse the water with spices and then add the rum at the end.

Sugar can be adjusted as per your taste. I like this drink slightly sweet, but if you want, you can totally skip adding sugar to the recipe.

Ingredients

Spices – I used cloves, cinnamon, and star anise to spice the water. You can add more spices if you like them. Some options are bay leaves, black pepper, red chili, etc.

Rum – Use any dark rum that you prefer. I used Old Monk.

Other Ingredients – You will also need brown sugar, water, and oranges.

How To Make Mulled Rum

Step 1: Add the following ingredients to a saucepan.

  • 2 cups of water
  • ยผ cup brown sugar
  • 6-8 cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2-3 star anise
  • 3-4 orange slices

Step 2: Keep the pan over medium-high heat and bring the water to a boil.

Tip: You can slightly crush the spices in a mortar and pestle for a more potent flavor.

Step 3: Reduce the heat to low and simmer the mixture for 5 minutes.

All the ingredients except rum simmering in a pan.

Step 4: Add ยฝ cup of dark rum to the pan and simmer for 20 seconds to warm it.

Strained cocktail.

Step 6: Garnish with a star anise, an orange slice, and a cinnamon stick. Serve hot. You can also use a mint sprig to garnish the drink for a pop of color.

You can simmer the spices in water and store this mixture in the refrigerator for 5-6 days. When ready to serve, just heat it up again, add rum, and serve.
