Chocolate Lassi is a delicious twist on the classic Lassi. This sweet, creamy, and refreshing drink is made by combining yogurt (dahi) and chocolate. Serve it as an evening snack or sip on a hot day.

I had a friend visiting me yesterday evening, and I wanted to serve her something refreshing since the days have been really hot. So, I made this delicious chocolate lassi for her.

This lassi is a variation of the Classic Sweet Lassi with chocolate added. It comes together quickly using a few simple ingredients.

You can serve it as an evening snack or any time during the day when you feel like sipping something refreshing. Kids will love this drink, too.

What Is Chocolate Lassi?

Chocolate lassi is a fusion Indian beverage that blends traditional lassi, a yogurt-based drink from the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent, with cocoa powder, dark chocolate, or chocolate syrup.

Unlike a chocolate milkshake, which leans on ice cream and milk, chocolate lassi gets its signature creaminess from thick, full-fat curd (dahi). The result is a drink that is richer than a smoothie, tangier than a milkshake, and more refreshing than hot chocolate.

Ingredients

  • Yogurt – For the best texture and consistency, use full-fat yogurt to make lassi. You can also use Greek yogurt as an alternative. If using homemade yogurt, make sure it’s not too sour.
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk makes the lassi rich and thick, and also adds sweetness.
  • Chocolate – I prefer Cadbury’s, but you can use any chocolate you like.
  • Others – You will also need whole milk (full-fat milk), sugar, and water. You can adjust the amount of sugar as per your taste.

Optional Add-ons

  • Vanilla extract (¼ teaspoon) to round out the chocolate flavor.
  • A pinch of ground cardamom to nod to tradition. It pairs with cocoa shockingly well.
  • Peanut butter or almond butter (1 tablespoon) for a Nutella-adjacent twist.
  • A shot of espresso if you want mocha lassi energy.

How To Make Chocolate-Flavored Lassi

Step 1: Add 2 tablespoon whole milk, 2 tablespoon sweetened condensed milk, and 50 g chocolate (chopped) to a nonstick pan.

Milk, condensed milk and chocolate added to a pan.

Step 2: Cook over medium heat until the chocolate melts and the mixture is smooth. Stir frequently.

Smooth mixture made.

Step 3: Remove the pan from the heat and let the mixture cool down to room temperature. Add 3 cups of chilled plain yogurt, 2 cups of chilled water, and ยผ cup of sugar to a bowl.

Yogurt, water and sugar added in a bowl.

Step 4: Whisk with a wire whisk until the mixture is frothy and the sugar is dissolved.

Whisked well.

Step 5: Add the cooled chocolate mixture to the bowl.

Chocolate mixture added to the bowl.

Step 6: Whisk until combined.

Mixed well.

Step 7: Pour the chocolate lassi into serving glasses, then add a few ice cubes to each. Garnish with chocolate curls and serve chilled.

Chill the glasses. Five minutes in the freezer before pouring keeps the lassi colder, longer. Small move, big impact.

Chocolate Lassi FAQs

How do I make chocolate curls for garnishing?

Scrape the sides of the chocolate bar with a vegetable peeler to obtain chocolate curls for garnish. Use a thick bar for more pronounced curls.

Can I store chocolate lassi?

Chocolate Lassi tastes best when served fresh. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge in a covered container for about a day. Shake well before consuming.
