I grew up loving Fruit Cream as it was one of the desserts my mom made the most. This dessert is quite popular among North Indian homes and is made for several special occasions, birthday parties, marriage ceremonies, and house parties. I have tasted it in many of my friends homes, but honestly, my mom’s version is the best!

She didn’t use only cream to mix with the fruits; instead, she added some plain yogurt to the mixture, which made this dessert a little lighter and perfectly balanced. So, let’s try this recipe!

About Fruit Cream

Fruit Cream is a delicious summer dessert made with with freshly chopped fruits and nuts added to a mixture of creamy yogurt and cream.

You can make this light and refreshing dessert quickly using very few ingredients.

Try making this fruit salad with cream for your special occasions, festivals, or get-togethers. I would suggest that you serve it chilled in small serving bowls and to make it look good, garnish it with chopped fresh fruits, nuts, and a mint sprig. For larger number of people, you can also serve it in a large bowl and let people serve themselves.

Ingredients

Yogurt and Cream – This dessert consists of plain yogurt (dahi, curd) and unsweetened light whipping cream. If you live in the US, I suggest you use something with a fat percentage of 35% or lower for best results.

If you have an Indian grocery store around, you can buy this cream from them. They usually have low-fat cream brands, such as Amul and Milky Mist, which have a lower fat percentage of about 20%, which works great in this recipe.

Vanilla – Fruits and vanilla pair and that’s why vanilla is my choice of flavoring for this dessert. I sometimes replace vanilla extract with 2-3 drops of rose water or ½ teaspoon orange zest to change the flavor.

Fruits – You can use whatever fruits you have handy. I used a mix of apples, bananas, green grapes, oranges, pomegranates, strawberries, mangoes, and kiwis.

You can also try to add sapota, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, papaya, custard apples, pears, figs, peaches, nectarines, plums, cherries, black grapes, dragon fruit, passion fruit, etc.

I do not suggest adding melons like watermelon, cantaloupe, musk melon, etc., as they may make the dessert watery and lose its consistency. Pineapple is also not recommended as it will make the cream bitter after refrigeration.

You can skip any of the fruits you don’t like or if they are not available.

Nuts – I used almonds, cashew nuts, and pistachios, you can also use walnuts, pecans, etc.

Give it a twist and make a shahi fruit cream recipe by adding saffron, cardamom powder, rose water, rose petals, and fruits and nuts.

How To Make Fruit Cream

Take 1 cup of unsweetened light-whipping cream and 1 cup of plain yogurt in a bowl. Whisk using your electric whisk or a hand-held wire whisk until smooth and creamy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this recipe vegan?

To make this as a vegan recipe, replace the cream with a non-dairy whipping cream. Many options (tropolite, Rich’s) are available these days in the markets. Dairy yogurt can also be replaced with any plant-based yogurt available near you.

Can I use store-bought whipped cream to make this dessert?

Yes, you can! Transfer the whipped cream you bought to a bowl. Then add yogurt and mix it well until smooth and creamy. Add your diced fruits and mix well. Chill and serve.

Variations

With Ice Cream – You can also make the base of this dessert using ice cream instead of fresh cream and yogurt to make it taste different.

To do this variaton, slightly soften a brick of locally bought vanilla ice cream and whisk it using your wire whisk. Then add fruits and nuts to it and serve immediately.

Layered Dessert – To make it into a layered dessert, layer your fresh fruits, whipped cream, and yogurt mixture in a glass or bowl one over the other.

With Cream Cheese – Mix softened cream cheese with whipped cream, powdered sugar, and a little vanilla extract. Fold in your fruits and nuts. Chill and serve.

Using Canned Fruits – You can replace fresh fruits with canned fruits if you prefer. You can use any canned fruit, such as peaches, pears, pineapples, or a fruit cocktail to make this recipe.
