About Pizza Lava Toast

Pizza Lava Toast is a delicious toast recipe oozing with cheese and incredible pizza flavors. These days, the recipe is going viral on TikTok for its addictive taste and ease of making.

The bread slices are slathered with garlic butter, stuffed with cheddar cheese, topped with pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, and your favorite toppings, and then baked to perfection.

You can enjoy it for an indulgent breakfast or a snack. It can also be served as a side with pasta, salad, or risotto for weekend brunch.

Ingredients

For The Garlic Butter – You will need garlic, salted butter, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and black pepper powder. You can adjust the seasonings as per your taste.

If you like to make it spicy, throw some red pepper flakes too.

Bread Slices – I like to make these using regular white or whole wheat bread, but you can also make them with gluten-free bread.

Cheese – This toast recipe uses two kinds of cheese: cheddar and mozzarella. Cheddar cheese slices are stuffed between two pieces of bread, whereas shredded mozzarella is used as a topping.

Pizza Toppings – You can customize the pizza toast with your choice of toppings. You can choose from mini pepperoni, mushrooms, bell peppers, olives, etc.

You will also need pizza sauce.

How To Make Pizza Lava Toast

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Make Garlic Butter

In a small bowl, mix the following ingredients until well combined. Set aside.

  • 2 tablespoon softened salted butter
  • 2 teaspoon minced garlic
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ¼ teaspoon dried basil
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper powder

Prepare The Toast

Lay 4 bread slices on a baking sheet. 

Spread the garlic butter mixture evenly on one side of each slice.

Keep the baking tray in the middle rack of the oven and toast the bread slices for about 5 minutes or until they are lightly browned.

Remove the baking sheet from the oven.

Flip 2 bread slices over so that the toasted side is facing up.

Keep a slice of cheddar cheese on top of two bread slices.

Top with the remaining bread slices, butter side down. 

The other 2 bread slices topped over the cheese slices with butter side down.

Press the center of the bread to make an indentation.

Spread ½ cup of pizza sauce in the indentations.

Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese on top of the sauce, covering the bread slices.

Top with mini pepperoni, sliced mushrooms, cubed bell peppers, and sliced olives.

Bake The Toast

Place the baking sheet back into the oven and bake for 8-10 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Once the cheese has melted, switch the oven to broil and cook for 1-2 minutes until the cheese is golden and slightly crispy.

Remove the Pizza Toast from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

Sprinkle some red pepper flakes and dried oregano on top.

Cut each slice into halves or quarters and serve warm.

Ingredients 

For The Garlic Butter

  • 2 tablespoons salted butter (softened)

  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper powder

For The Lava Toast

  • 4 large bread slices (white or brown)
  • 2 slices cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup pizza sauce
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • choice of pizza toppings (I used mini pepperoni, sliced mushrooms, cubed bell peppers, sliced black olives)
  • red pepper flakes and dried oregano (as required for topping)

Instructions 

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  • Top with the toppings.

Bake The Toast

  • Place the baking sheet back into the oven and bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • Once the cheese has melted, switch the oven to broil and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until the cheese is golden and slightly crispy.
  • Remove the Pizza Toast from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
  • Sprinkle some red pepper flakes and dried oregano on top.
  • Cut each slice into halves or quarters and serve warm.
