About Fruit Cream

Fruit Cream is a delicious North Indian summer dessert made by combining fresh seasonal fruits with sweetened whipped cream and nuts.

My mom made this no-cook, eggless dessert for most festivals, including Holi and Diwali. She also made it for our birthday parties, as it was a favorite among all the kids.

I have tasted many versions of this Indian fruit salad, but honestly, my mom’s recipe is my favorite.

She didn’t use just cream; instead, she added plain yogurt to the mixture, making this dessert a little lighter and perfectly balanced. Do give her recipe a try!

Ingredients

  • Yogurt and Cream – This dessert uses plain yogurt (dahi, curd) and unsweetened whipping cream.
  • Vanilla – Fruits and vanilla pair very well, and that’s why vanilla is my choice of flavoring for this dessert. I sometimes replace vanilla extract with 2-3 drops of rose water or ยฝ teaspoon orange zest to change the flavor.
  • Fruits – You can use whatever fruits you have handy. You can skip any of the fruits you don’t like or if they are not available.
  • Nuts – I used almonds, cashews, and pistachios. You can also use other nuts, such as walnuts or pecans.

Which Fruits Are the Best To Make Fruit Cream

I like to use a mix of apples, bananas, green grapes, oranges, pomegranates, strawberries, mangoes, and kiwis.

You can also try adding other fruits like sapota, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, papaya, custard apples, pears, figs, peaches, nectarines, plums, cherries, black grapes, dragon fruit, and passion fruit.

I do not suggest adding melons like watermelon, cantaloupe, musk melon, etc., as they may make the dessert watery and lose its consistency.

Pineapple is also not recommended as it will make the cream bitter after refrigeration.

Common Mistakes To Avoid When Making Fruit Cream

Fruit Cream FAQs

Can I make a vegan fruit cream?

To make this a vegan recipe, replace the cream with a non-dairy whipping cream. Many options (tropolite, Rich’s) are available in the market today. Dairy yogurt can also be replaced with any plant-based yogurt available near you.

Can I use store-bought whipped cream (Cool Whip) to make fruit cream?

Yes, you can! Transfer the whipped cream you bought to a bowl. Then add the yogurt and mix until smooth and creamy. Add your diced fruits and mix well. Chill and serve.

How to store leftover fruit cream?

Fruit cream can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days. After that, the fruits will release water, and the cream will become watery.
Freezing is not recommended, as it may change the cream’s texture once thawed.

Variations

Layered Dessert – To make a layered dessert, layer your fresh fruit, whipped cream, and yogurt mixture in a glass or a bowl, one layer on top of the other.

Using Canned Fruits – You can replace fresh fruits with canned fruits if you prefer. You can use any canned fruit, such as peaches, pears, pineapples, or a fruit cocktail, to make this recipe.

Shahi – Make a shahi fruit cream with saffron, cardamom powder, rose water, rose petals, and fruits and nuts.

Serving Suggestions

Serve it chilled in small serving bowls and, to make it look good, garnish it with chopped fresh fruit, nuts, and a mint sprig.

For a larger group, you can also serve it in a large bowl and let people serve themselves.
