A friend gifted us these lovely mule mugs a few months back. I immediately ordered ginger beer, an important ingredient in making Moscow Mule cocktails, but somehow, the order got delayed, and I got it only last week.

To start with, I tried this virgin version of the cocktail. Mohit and I loved it, so now I am confident about trying out other versions as well. I will share them as I make more, but for now, here is the non-alcoholic Moscow Mule recipe for you all!

About Virgin Moscow Mule

Moscow Mule is a popular cocktail made with non-alcoholic ginger beer, vodka, mint leaves, and freshly squeezed lemon juice. Virgin Moscow Mule Mocktail is a version of this drink with no alcohol (vodka) added.

It is traditionally served in copper mugs, also called mule mugs. The copper mug keeps the drink extra cold and enhances its flavor and aroma.

It has sweetness from ginger beer, a zingy taste from lemon juice, a fizz from club soda, and a refreshing flavor from mint leaves.

This non-alcoholic mule mocktail is easy to make, needs simple ingredients, and comes together in 5 minutes.

Enjoy it on a hot day, or make it for a baby shower, summer brunch, get-togethers, potlucks, or house parties.

Ingredients

Chilled Ginger Beer – Ginger beer packs this virgin drink with so much flavor: spicy, a little sweet, and refreshing.

Please do not confuse it with ginger ale. Ginger beer is nonalcoholic, less sweet, and has a more gingery flavor than ginger ale.

The choice of ginger beer can greatly affect the flavor of your Virgin mule recipe. Some popular options include brands like Fever-Tree, Q Mixers, and Bundaberg. Choose one that suits your taste preferences.

Mint Leaves – Use fresh mint leaves for a refreshing flavor.

Lemon Juice – For the best taste, Use freshly squeezed lemon juice. Bottled lemon juice is a no-no here. You can replace lemon juice with fresh lime juice.

Chilled Club Soda (Sparkling Water) – Top the virgin mule with club soda to make it fizzy.

Sugar Syrup (Simple Syrup) – Adjust it as per your taste.

You will also need a few lemon wedges or lemon slices, mint sprigs, and lots of ice.

How To Make Non Alcoholic Moscow Mule

Chill the ginger beer and club soda for a few hours before making the cocktail.

Fill a copper Moscow mule mug with ice cubes.

Pour in the following ingredients and stir well.

  • ½ cup of chilled ginger beer
  • ¼ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoon sugar syrup

Top with chilled club soda.

Taste the drink and add more sugar syrup if you like a sweeter drink.

Garnish with lemon rounds (or lime wedge) and sprig of fresh mint. Serve and enjoy!

Frequently Asked Questions

How to make sugar syrup at home?

To make sugar syrup, combine 1 cup granulated sugar and 1 cup water in a saucepan. Stir over medium heat until the sugar dissolves, which takes about 3-5 minutes. Reduce the heat to low, allowing it to simmer briefly to ensure clarity. Remove from heat, cool to room temperature for about 30 minutes, and then transfer to an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for several weeks.

Can I add alcohol to this recipe?

Add 2 oz (60 ml) vodka per serving to your recipe to make a traditional Moscow mule cocktail.

Why is the Moscow mule served in a copper mug?

The Moscow Mule is traditionally served in beautiful copper mugs for historical and practical reasons. This distinctive choice of vessel was a marketing decision in the 1940s, giving the cocktail a unique and memorable presentation. Copper mugs also efficiently regulate temperature, keeping this delicious drink cold for a long time.

Variations

You can replace half of the club soda with pomegranate juice, cranberry juice, orange juice etc for a variation of virgin moscow mule recipe.

Add some sliced jalapenos for a spicy kick.

You can add fresh berries like cranberries or raspberries, if you are making it for the holiday season.
